 The article discusses the problem of the withdrawal of the Western Group of Military Forces (WGMF) – the most powerful and effective mechanism of ensuring of interests in Europe after the Second World War – from the German territory after its reunification (1990). In this context it investigates a group or treaties, which regulated this process and were created with the active personal involvement of Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev and German chancellor Helmut Kohl. The article examines the main difficulties of the withdrawal of Western Group of Military Forces by Russia, taking in account difficult internal situation and profound changes in the international situation in the first half of the 1990s. It analyses the consequences of curtailment of the presence of Russian troops on German territory for the security of the Russian Federation until the mid-2010s.
