The CSDS and the RIAC's webinar "International assistance and sanctions pressure: vectors of mutual influence"

On December 15, 2021, the CSDS and the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), with the support of the International Development Assistance Commission of the Public Council under Rossotrudnichestvo, held a webinar "International assistance and sanctions pressure: vectors of mutual influence".

The webinar was the third joint event organized by the CSDS and RIAC in the anniversary year (both structures celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2021), and confirmed their interest in further strengthening the long-term partnership.

In the first part of the webinar, a common "coordinate system" was set. The experts have outlined a conceptual framework for studying the problems of mutual influence of international aid and sanctions and they will consider the actions of the leading actors in world politics (Russia, China, the USA, the EU, etc.), which form a network of multidirectional vectors.

In the second part of the webinar, attention was focused on individual country cases, which most clearly illustrate both the application of secondary sanctions for providing assistance to the objects of primary restrictions, and the impact of sanctions instruments and risks on the volume, structure and effectiveness of international assistance.

The geography of the cases included such regions as the Middle East (Syria, Palestine), Latin America and the Caribbean (Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua), the CIS space (Belarus), South Asia (Afghanistan).

The event was opened by the RIAC General Director Andrey Kortunov.
